This issue only affects the outer metal band of the iPhone; it would be easy to make a comment related to the infamous "you're holding it wrong" line from the iPhone 4 days, but there is zero chance of completely avoiding touching the metal band without a case.

So it is good that the discoloration is not permanent. But it does mean that some people may have to procure the appropriate cloth if they care about keeping the shiny new iPhone look. Then it might be easier to find a nice case that covers the titanium and doesn't get fingerprints.
