Google Pixel 8a leaked just before Pixel 8 launch

The Google Pixel 8a is expected to launch in about eight more months, but its first major design leak has already appeared ahead of the Google Pixel 8 launch.

The image, purportedly the successor to the Pixel 7a, was posted on Twitter/X by Abhishek Yadav. At first glance, the Pixel 8a has more rounded corners than the Pixel 7a, which appears to fit the design changes of the Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 8 Pro.

It also has two cameras on the back (one main camera like the 7a offers and what appears to be an ultra-wide camera), a matte texture on the camera rubber and side rails, all painted in a handsome blue; the Pixel 7a already has a "Sea" blue, but the Pixel 8a version appears to be a deeper shade.

Yadav also showed us the potential of the Pixel 8a up front. Looking beyond the interface, which looks like the Pixel version of Android we know and love, the display has the same unfortunate chunky bezel that the Pixel 7a has. This makes the phone look a bit outdated, but unfortunately is likely the result of Google's attempt to keep the cost of the phone down to around $500.

It is difficult to judge the size of the Pixel 8a from these images, but it will probably be 6.1 inches like the Pixel 7a again. However, given that the Pixel 8 is said to be moving from 6.3" to 6.2", perhaps Google will adjust the size to avoid confusing buyers or cannibalizing its own sales.

While the leak reveals nothing about the phone's internals, one almost certain feature of the Pixel 8a is the Tensor G3 chipset. This is speculated to be Google's newest processor, first introduced in the Pixel 8 according to rumors, which should mean improved performance and efficiency for devices that use it. Nevertheless, the results of what is believed to be the first Tensor G3 benchmark for the Pixel 8a were less than impressive.

Google Pixel a-series phones usually appear at Google I/O each May, so it will be quite some time before we see a device that appears to be a finished product. However, it seems likely that this is a very early prototype of the Pixel 8a, as no unexpected details have appeared, except perhaps for the very rounded corners.

A Made by Google event is scheduled for October 4 in the near future, and Google has already announced that this will be the date of the Pixel 8 series launch. Not much else has been confirmed about these new flagship Pixels, but leakers have seen a new 50MP main camera and 64MP ultrawide camera, Video Unblur functionality, and a new flat display that ditches the Pixel 7 Pro's curved panel They claim that it might.
