September was a busy month for Bose: First, they introduced the new Bose QuietComfort Ultra Noise-Canceling Headphones, which promise to raise the bar on noise-canceling technology, and now they have introduced the cutting-edge Dolby Atmos soundbar.

It is called the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar and combines Dolby Atmos spatial audio with machine learning and artificial intelligence to create the best possible sound.

According to a post on the Bose website about the new soundbar, Bose's machine learning model analyzes "millions of content clips" and uses that data to automatically adjust the tonal balance to "make spoken words . without losing the impact of immersive sound effects."

In terms of spatial audio, Bose says it uses PhaseGuide technology to create a more realistic experience; rather than focusing solely on the up-firing component, PhaseGuide "pins" intelligible sound to the left and right without speakers, creating an artificial create surround sound channels.

This is definitely something that other soundbars have tried in the past with little success, and it will be interesting to see how the Smart Ultra Soundbar works.

Based on its feature set, Bose seems to be positioning the Smart Ultra Soundbar as a competitor to the Sonos Arc. Bose has even replaced the Smart Soundbar 900 with the Smart Ultra Soundbar as their flagship home theater product.

The launch price on the Bose website is $899, the same price as the Sonos Arc.

Nevertheless, both soundbars compete in the more premium realm of home theater products. Sure, they offer a lot of flexibility and features for the price, but they are still incredibly expensive compared to basic 2.1 channel soundbars.

Another issue here is that the Smart Ultra Soundbar does not come with a subwoofer like the Sonos Arc.

Given how cheap other Dolby Atmos soundbars like the $400 JBL Bar 5.0 MultiBeam are, Bose will have to make the $900 Smart Ultra Soundbar compelling.
