Review of Netflix's "Hit Man" and everything we know so far

Netflix may have scored one of the best films of the year.

"Hit Man," a favorite at the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals, is now being released worldwide by the streaming service. According to Deadline Hollywood, the action-comedy film will be released on Netflix in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, and Iceland. A theatrical release in some form is also expected.

But you are probably wondering, "Why should I see this?" Critical buzz aside, the story seems to be Hollywood gold. The Hitman is based on the true story of Gary Johnson (Glen Powell), a hitman leading a double life as a staff investigator for the Harris County District Attorney's Office.

Yes, this hired hitman works for the police when he is not killing people for money.

I'm already interested in "Hitman"; here's everything you need to know about Netflix's next hit, including release date, cast, and early reviews.

"Hitman" has already debuted for select audiences, making its international debut at the Venice International Film Festival on September 5, and later at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Netflix purchased the distribution rights.

But most audiences will have to wait; according to Netflix, "Hit Man" is "coming soon to Netflix in the United States and select countries," Deadline reports, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Iceland are likely to be included.

As noted above, "Hitman" is also expected to have a theatrical release, details of which are still unknown at this time.

As for a Netflix release date, "Hitman" is clearly a title that the streaming distributor wants to put out during awards season. That means it will probably be available in November or December.

Besides Glen Powell, who not only stars as Gary Johnson but also co-wrote "Hitman" with director Richard Linklater, the other main character appears to be Maddie Masters, played by Adria Arjona. Maddie is on the run from her abusive husband Ray (Evan Holtzman), and eventually Johnson will turn his double life upside down to protect her.

The full cast of Hit Man is as follows:

Hit Man has already debuted in both Venice and Toronto and has already received a significant number of critical reviews: out of 43 critical reviews, Hit Man currently has a 98% Rotten Tomatoes rating and seems destined to become "Certified Fresh."

In his review, IGN's Rafael Motamayor described "Hitman" as "a sharp script with a strong performance by Glen Powell. For Powell, who had already distinguished himself with his role as the Hangman in Top Gun, "Hitman" was a star in the making:

Powell's performance in "The Last Airbender" is "a strong performance and a sharp script.

Other critics praised Powell and "Hitman's" script, with TheWrap's Ben Kroll calling "Hitman" a "deliriously funny star vehicle" and RogerEbert.com's Brian Talerico equally praising Linklater's script and direction, called Powell's performance a "revelation." While "Hitman" may not ultimately be a second-rate follow-up to "Citizen Kane," most people seem to love the film, and Powell in particular.

There is only one bad review that prevents "Hit Man" from being 100% perfect: in Autostraddle's Toronto International Film Festival recap, Drew Gregory said that "Hit Man" missed the mark in how it retells this true crime story This is a valid opinion. While this is a valid opinion, after reading the critique, I felt that Gregory had lost the plot in some ways. First of all, it seems a bit intellectually dishonest to critique a film billed as a comedy as the drama it really wanted to be. They also frequently attack the film as "toxic liberal politics," a criticism that is notably absent from other critiques of "Hitman."

I have not personally seen the film yet, as I did not even attend the festival, but after reading through the early reviews, I agree with the overall critical consensus. I hope you come to "Hitman" to enjoy the brilliant comedy and Glen Powell's potentially star-making performance. I intend to do so.
