There is only one product I want on Amazon.

Amazon's fall event has come to a close, and there were plenty of announcements, from a new and improved Alexa with generative AI chat capabilities to a new Echo Hub, Fire TV Stick, and eero Wi-Fi 7 router.

But the hardware product I really wanted Amazon to update, the Kindle Oasis, was not available.

If you remember Amazon's fall event last year, the Kindle Scribe was the star attraction. But the Oasis (which ranks high on our Best Kindles list) is still in its third generation and hasn't been updated since 2019. I've had one since the happy days of 2016, but it's safe to say someone needs to step up to the stage today and take the wrapping paper off the 4th generation Kindle Oasis.

Aside from the Scribe, the Oasis has the largest and best screen on a Kindle, has physical buttons for turning pages (which I prefer), and the later versions boast IPX8 water resistance. The curved back and wedge-style design make it light as a feather, and the ergonomic magnetic cover extends battery life.

Indeed, the Kindle Oasis costs nearly twice as much as the Kindle Paperwhite. Amazon would rather focus on the wallet-friendly Echo and Ring cameras, which are likely to be Christmas gifts and Black Friday deals.

However, the Oasis is in dire need of a refresh. It still relies on the microUSB port for charging and is the only Kindle that has not moved to USB-C. This is because my aging device has been charged so many times that the battery cannot hold a charge for more than a couple of days. Maybe the European Union can intervene and force a change like they did with the iPhone 15.

In fact, the Oasis has always been somewhat criticized for its battery life, which is to be expected given how thin and light the design is. However, Amazon does not need to change the design significantly at all. The metal casing is easy to hold and oozes luxury over the plastic Paperwhite; is the Oasis the best Kindle for most people? Of course not, but it's one of the only devices I always keep on my nightstand.
