9 new favorite movies coming to Prime Video this month

Prime Video is one of the best streaming services out there. But not only is it a great value, it also comes with a huge content library filled with great movies.

Even better, Amazon adds new movies every month so you never have to repeat the same classic. These movies range from Academy Award winners to comedies, dramas, action thrillers, and more. Not every movie is covered, but you will never be short of choices.

Of course, you have to actually choose which films you want to see. Fortunately, I have you covered. Here are nine of my favorite movies that appeared on Prime Video this month.

When it comes to 1990s teen comedies, none are more beloved than 10 Things I Hate About You. Starring Julia Stiles as Katharina "Kat" Stratford and Heath Ledger as Patrick Verona, the film is widely known as the breakthrough film for the two and co-star Joseph Gord-Levitt, who played Cameron James, a transfer student in love with Kat's sister Bianca (Larisa Oleinik). The film is widely known as the breakthrough film of the

"10 Things I Hate About You" may not be a cinematic masterpiece, but as a teen romantic comedy, it is witty and brilliantly scripted. Since the film is a retelling of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, English teachers everywhere had an excuse to show the film in school. The soundtrack is excellent, and there are live performances by Letters to Cleo and Save Ferris in the film. If you want to unwind with a fun movie, or make it a date movie, this is the best Prime Video choice this month.

It may be tough to transition from the fun, witty entertainments of the 90s to Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi epic, but trust me, it's well worth it. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a masterpiece and many (including myself) considered by many (including myself) to be one of the greatest films of all time. It also features one of the most iconic opening themes in the history of cinema with Richard Strauss' "Zarathustra Speaks." If you saw "Barbie" this summer, director Greta Gerwig played homage to Kubrick by using elements of this scene, including the soundtrack, in the opening scene of her own film.

But as iconic as the opening score is, it is the rest of the film that makes 2001: A Space Odyssey a masterpiece. Although the film has no dialogue and is at times overbearing, its exploration of human evolution, alien life, and technology makes it the quintessential science fiction film. We also get an early look at the dangers of AI thanks to the computer HAL 9000 (voiced by Douglas Lane). I recommend watching it with time to spare, but it is well worth it.

Say what you will about the man Nicolas Cage, but the range of the actor is impressive. And in "Face/Off," he takes on his most iconic and difficult role, having to embody two men in 133 action-packed minutes.

Without wanting to give too much away, Cage is not the only actor playing two roles in "Face/Off" as the criminal Caster Troy. John Travolta co-stars with Cage as FBI Special Agent Sean Archer, who must also embody something else in order to finish his revenge on Troy. Indeed, these men must immerse themselves in each other in order to triumph over their opponents, and the abyss is truly shocking. This action thriller by John Woo is one of the most unique action films ever made and a must-see for action movie fans. There is no other film like it.

I knew "Four Weddings and a Funeral" long before I saw it in a hotel in Tenerife. This romantic comedy catapulted Hugh Grant from movie actor to movie star. Grant's Charles is effortlessly charming throughout the film, and his romance with Carrie (Andie MacDowell) is one of the most enjoyable romances to watch on screen, either in a romantic comedy or in a movie.

Grant and McDowell are not the only ones who make Four Weddings and a Funeral enjoyable. The film also features Charles' entourage of Tom (James Fleet), Gareth (Simon Callow), Matthew (John Hannah), Fiona (Kristin Scott Thomas), David (David Bower), and Scarlett (Charlotte Coleman), spend the wedding season (and funeral) with Charles. Rowan Atkinson, who plays Father Gerald, gives a comically impassioned performance that is unrelenting throughout the film, and if you want a romantic comedy that is a little more mature than 10 Things I Hate About You, check out Four Weddings and a Funeral.

I recently created a list of the best soccer movies and best baseball movies available for streaming right now. But with "Rocky," Prime Video has added the best sports movie ever to its catalog. With Sylvester Stallone as the titular character Rocky Balboa, "Rocky" won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Stallone was also nominated for Best Actor and Best Screenplay.

Some may be dissatisfied with the film's ending. If for some reason you find it lacking, you can also watch "Rocky II" on Prime Video once you have finished watching the original. But once you've seen "Rocky," I think you'll agree that it couldn't have ended any other way. In any case, you won't regret watching what may be the best movie on this list.

Before "John Wick," before "Taken," Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in "The Bourne Identity" was the ultimate example of a movie star becoming an action movie god. In this film, Damon plays a man with amnesia who turns out to be a CIA agent. What follows is just under two hours of interwoven intrigue and incredible action set pieces.

Aside from Damon, the cast is truly stellar. Franka Potente ("Run Lola Run") plays Marie Kreutz, who teams up with Bourne for part of the film. There is also Chris Cooper as the head of Treadstone, the CIA program that pursues Bourne, Clive Owen as the Professor, the CIA agent tasked with killing Bourne, and Brian Cox as CIA Deputy Director Ward Abbott.

After watching "The Bourne Identity," make it an action movie marathon and watch the sequel "The Bourne Supremacy." While "Identity" may be the better action movie on its own, "Supremacy" is also great and features some of the best car chases in action movie history.

If you don't watch many foreign language films, I understand. But "The Motorcycle Diaries" is the only exception worth making. Starring Gael Garcia Bernal as Ernesto "Che" Guevara, the film is based on his true story of his travels in South America before he became the Marxist revolutionary many know today.

Indeed, it is on this journey that Guevara begins his path to becoming a communist revolutionary, and he begins his journey as a 23-year-old medical student about to graduate. But as he and his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna) travel through the mountains, deserts, and rainforests of South America, Guevara learns of the horrors that befall the working-class communities they travel through. Subtitles are required for those who don't speak Spanish, but you won't mind them right away. One of the best foreign language films I've ever seen, and still holds a special place in my heart.

Sometimes less is more, especially when it comes to horror. Not every horror story has enough intrigue and terror to justify a 90-minute film. That's part of the charm of the anthology format like Black Mirror: before something gets stale, you have the next scary concept ready to go, and V/H/S is the film equivalent, focusing on found footage horror.

The framing is simple, but serves to set the creepy atmosphere: a group of teenagers are hired to break into a rundown house and steal a rare videotape. The film is filled with dead bodies, an old TV hub, and an endless series of cryptic images. Each image is from one of the VHS tapes found in the room. Some are more puzzling than haunting, as it is not always clear when they left one story and entered another, but the overarching unnerving tension of "V/H/S" will certainly leave an impression.

We've seen plenty of dystopias on the big screen, but Children of Men has a charm that makes it worth revisiting again and again. It reminds us that even in the darkest of times, hope can be found. And the one-off action scenes are just as thrilling to watch today as they were when the film was released 15 years ago.

Based on the novel of the same name by British author P. D. James, Children of Men is set in a world where mass infertility has brought society to the brink of collapse. In this bleak future, a disillusioned government official (Clive Owen) becomes an unexpected savior when he helps a refugee (Claire-Hope Ashitey) escape from dystopian England. Alfonso CuarĂ³n's Children of Men is a modern masterpiece. It also features fine performances by Julianne Moore, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Pam Ferris, Charlie Hunnam, and Michael Caine.
