Eureka! Apple finally updates Magic Mouse to USB-C and eliminates Lightning.

The iPhone 15 finally has the USB-C port we've all been waiting for, and the AirPods Pro 2 will also support USB-C with an updated charging case. This is great news, but we wonder which other products will finally be able to ditch their aging Lightning ports. If recent reports are true, we may soon have our answer.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Apple tipster and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman (via iMore) reports that the Cupertino-based tech giant is working on a USB-C port for the Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard with USB-C ports. These products are said to be released alongside the rumored iMac 2023.

Gurman previously claimed that Apple would launch a new Mac in October 2023, but analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple may not launch a new M3 MacBook in 2023. However, it is still possible that Apple will release a new iMac in October with the rumored M3 chip, as previously rumored. If this happens, an update to Apple's peripherals with USB-C ports could also be announced.

Regarding the transition from Lightning to USB-C, Garman also stated that regular AirPods will support USB-C charging sometime in 2024. Regarding the updated AirPods Pro 2, Apple is forcing people to purchase an entirely new set of wireless earbuds instead of selling the new USB-C charging case by itself, which is very disappointing. It is unclear if the regular AirPods, which are supposedly an updated version, will do the same.

Even if the EU ruling does not force Apple to adopt iPhone charging via USB-C, it is past time the company ditched the old Lightning port and moved to the almost ubiquitous USB-C port. While this move may not seem like a big deal, it is one of the main reasons I am upgrading from the iPhone 13 Pro to the iPhone 15 Pro.

Now that Apple has reluctantly removed the Lightning port from the iPhone, it makes sense to completely phase it out from future products that would otherwise have Lightning. Since this is not an official announcement at this time, we will have to wait and see what Apple does next.

If Apple could put the Magic Mouse port somewhere other than the bottom, that would be great too. But that's a story for another day...
