Forget Apple Watch 9 - watchOS 10's fitness features instantly upgrade older models

The Apple Watch Series 9 has turned out to be a bigger upgrade than many leakers had expected. The new model comes with a faster processor, a brighter screen, enhanced tracking with a new UWB chip, and the ability to control functions with the tap of a finger

, which, when combined with watchOS 10 on the wearable, makes for a rather attractive package. However, if you already have an Apple Watch on your wrist, you may want to reconsider upgrading.

Not all models are supported, but as long as you have a 2018 Apple Watch Series 4 or later, you should be all set.

Here are five great fitness features that will breathe new life into your old Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch is always great for tracking bike rides, but it can be hard to keep track of your performance with both hands on the handlebars.

With watchOS 10, cycling is now a Live Activity on your connected iPhone. This means that by attaching the iPhone to the handlebars, you can view metrics such as heart rate zone, elevation, race route, and speed in real time on a full screen.

Another boon for riders is additional support for Bluetooth-enabled cycling accessories for indoor and outdoor workouts.

Power meters, speed sensors, and cadence sensors are all supported in watchOS 10, enabling all-new trackable metrics such as cycling power, cadence, and power zones.

Apple promises that its new algorithms can combine sensor data from the Apple Watch and connected power meters to estimate functional threshold power (FTP) - the level of intensity that a human can theoretically sustain on a one-hour ride.

Hikers have not been forgotten in the watchOS 10 update, and one update could be a savior. The compass app will be updated to add the ability to create waypoints of where the last cell phone signal was received. This means that if you need assistance, you can retrace your steps to the last place you had a signal.

If you are in the United States, you will also get a big upgrade to the watch Apple Maps with new topographic maps that show contour lines, hill shading, elevation details and local points. You will be able to search for nearby trail routes with a handy card that includes information on length, type, and difficulty.

The Apple Watch has so far done a good job of leading people to better physical health habits, but with this update to its mindfulness app, Apple is looking to boost mental health as well.

With watchOS 10, Apple has introduced a discreet and convenient way for users to keep track of their emotions and daily moods: simply turn the Digital Crown to scroll through the shapes that best represent their emotions, select the ones that are affecting them, and describe their feelings. You can then choose the one that is affecting you and describe your feelings.

Those who subscribe to Apple Fitness Plus also have a nice benefit made possible by watchOS 10.

Custom Plans offer workout and meditation plans tailored to the user's needs, and Stacks (shown above) allows Apple Watch owners to queue multiple workouts and meditations in a row. Finally, Audio Focus now allows users to choose whether to boost trainer instructions or workout playlists.
