Forget PlayStation Portal, this mobile PS5 controller is already compatible with iPhone 15 USB-C

Apple's official switch to USB-C for the iPhone 15 opens up a whole new world of chargers and accessories for those who have been using Lightning for the past decade. And one of those accessories may make the upcoming PlayStation Portal feel a bit out of date.

Backbone has confirmed that the Android version of the Backbone One controller with USB-C plug is compatible with the iPhone 15. This means you can get the controller to stream content from the PS5 and not worry about it becoming obsolete in a few years.

Those who opt for one of the older iPhone-compatible models equipped with a Lightning plug may not be so lucky.

For those who don't know, the Backbone One is a controller grip that attaches around the phone, turning it into something like a Nintendo Switch. But instead of playing Mario or Zelda, this version of the grip is specifically designed to play PS5 games.

It can stream games from the console without having to connect to a dual-sense controller; if you only have one PS5 controller, it can be very cumbersome to disconnect the controller from the console, connect it to your phone, and then put it back together again. If the case is attached to the phone, the hassle is greatly reduced.

The question is whether the $100 Backbone One is a better investment than the $199 PlayStation Portal. PlayStation remote streaming is not well received, and while I have never had a problem with it, some of my colleagues at Tom's Guide disagree. The Portal is Sony's chance to make sure PS5 streaming doesn't suck, but we won't know how effective it will be until after launch.

The PlayStation Portal only supports PS5 streaming; the Backbone One is claimed to support PS5, Xbox, Steam, and native mobile titles. Not to mention, the smartphone supports Bluetooth headphones, which Portal does not. Now only you can decide which option is right for you.

Backbone claims that the existing USB-C Backbone One controller will be compatible with the iPhone 15 via a software update to the Android app. Those ordering now will be happy to hear that the controller will be compatible with Android and iPhone 15 right out of the box.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 15 begin today (September 15) and will be officially released on September 22; the PlayStation Portal will be available on November 15, and the Backbone One is available now.
