The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones will be available "early October," and while Bose did not give a release date, October is right around the corner and it won't be long before these new headphones hit store shelves. Until then, they can be pre-ordered at Bose.com.

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones are priced at $429 and come in Black and White Smoke. The official predecessor, the Bose 700, is $399, so this is a price increase worth noting. [This price is slightly higher than the Sony WH-1000XM5, but still below the $549 AirPods Max. (These two headphones will be most closely competed with by the Bose QuietComfort Ultra.)

As noted above, the standard Bose QuietComfort Headphones are priced at $349, $20 more than the existing Bose QuietComfort 45.

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones follow Bose's design language, but incorporate some minimalist elements. Instead of a telescoping arm spilling over the ear cups, a thin band separates the headband from the cans.

The left earcup has a 2.5mm headphone jack and a USB-C input for charging. And on the right ear cup is a connect button and a control button that can be briefly pressed to pause, play, or toggle through a carousel of commands that can be set in the Bose app. Also on the right ear cup is a curved capacitive volume rail, indicated by a raised band.

The color-matched ear cups and headband cushions are moderately plump, and the contoured cup design is a bit more modern than before. The headset folds up for convenient storage in the included case.

Featuring new proprietary digital signal processing software, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones have spatial audio capabilities. According to Bose, its spatial audio technology supports any music source and does not require specially rendered tracks to take advantage of immersive listening.

Spatialized listening, which Bose classifies as what it now calls "Bose Immserive Audio," takes two forms. "Motion" is similar to the spatial audio you are familiar with, adapting so that as you turn your head or climb stairs, the sound moves with you; the "Still" setting anchors you to the sweet spot of the soundstage, so that even though you are just sitting at your desk or on the bus, the music It makes you feel like you are in the main seat of a studio.

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones feature a redesigned microphone system that claims better active noise cancellation and an "Aware" or clarity mode. The microphone claims to distinguish your voice from surrounding sounds, so when you are on the phone, the other person should be able to hear you clearly. The microphone also picks up voice commands for hands-free operation.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones claim up to 24 hours of continuous listening on a full charge without Immersive Audio mode enabled. With the Motion and Still modes mentioned above, this estimate drops to 18 hours. Bose has not explicitly mentioned fast charging, so we will have to wait and see how long we have to wait for the charge to complete before we can use the headphones on the go.

Bose completely revamped its consumer headphone series this year, touting the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones as its most premium option. the Bose 700 was a top-notch headphone, so the new Bose QuietComfort Ultra has big shoes to fill.
