Alfred Hitchcock's contribution to the animal attack horror subgenre is no cheap, pun-filled romp. It is one of the master of suspense's finest works, a chilling examination of what happens when nature turns against man without warning. The film can also be seen as an exploration of the psychosexuality of a troubled woman, seemingly vibrant socialite Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren). After meeting attorney Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) in a San Francisco pet store, she follows him to his family home in the small town of Bodega Bay, where the birds soon begin to behave very strangely. [As the birds become more aggressive toward humans, the characters' relationships and mental states are also broken. Hitchcock depicts this mayhem in a logical manner and does not use music to emphasize the loneliness of the humans living in Bodega Bay. Both the attack and the psychological toll it takes are horrific.

With a sequel coming to Netflix in December, now is a great time to catch up on this delightful animated comedy from stop-motion studio Aardman. Following on the heels of the popular Wallace and Gromit short, Aardman's first feature-length film captures the dry wit of England with a family-friendly story about a group of chickens desperate to escape their captors on a farm in the English countryside.

Directors Nick Park and Peter Lord have taken a fun, fast-paced story reminiscent of classic prison escape films like "Stalag 17" and "The Great Escape" and reimagined it by applying it to life on a chicken farm. Determined leader Ginger (Julia Sawalha) pins her hopes on Rocky (Mel Gibson), an American rooster who has crashed on the farm and claims he can teach the chickens to fly. Ingenious and detailed animation mixed with clever humor make for a satisfying comedy-adventure.

Jordan Peele makes a bold transition from comedy to horror in his acclaimed directorial debut. Daniel Kaluuya plays Chris, a black photographer, and the film is filled with humor. He realizes something is seriously wrong when he visits his white girlfriend Rose's (Allison Williams) family in an upscale upstate New York suburb. Peele satirizes the condescending perspective of wealthy white self-proclaimed liberals when confronted with actual people of color, and the film takes that condescension to a terrifying new conclusion.

Peel draws on horror classics like "The Stepford Wives" and "The Wicker Man" to provide effective scares along with contemporary social commentary. While deconstructing horror conventions, he smartly utilizes them to tell an urgent and poignant contemporary story.

Over the years, "Ghostbusters" has grown into a major franchise with a vast legacy and complex mythology, but the original film is best appreciated as a goofy supernatural comedy without such grand ambitions. Whether they are battling supernatural forces or just casually messing around, comedy legends Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Lymis are a joy to watch. Their chemistry is what makes "Ghostbusters" a classic, and the lore about the impending end of the world is just a bonus.

Joined by Ernie Hudson, the stars play a team of paranormal investigators who take on the specters infesting New York City. The ghosts themselves, including a green menace known as Slimer and a giant dessert mascot, Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, are more silly than scary. It's perfect for sardonic humor.

September is an appropriate month to revisit filmmaker Paul Greengrass's heartbreaking drama about the hijacking of United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. With a documentary touch of realism, Greengrass strives to recreate the events of that day as faithfully as possible, filling in only the necessary gaps where records are not available. The result is a film in which the audience is with the passengers, crew, and ground personnel as the terrorists take over the plane and attempt to crash it into an American federal building.

Greengrass thoroughly avoided sensationalizing any aspect of the tragedy, focusing instead on the procedural details and the determination of the passengers to fight back against the hijackers, who were able to avoid greater casualties. The film is a reminder of quiet heroism in the face of unimaginable danger.
