Google TV gets a major upgrade for gamers - Chromecast support

Google TV is immensely popular. Some of the best OLED TVs, and some of the best TVs overall, are running on this growing smart TV platform powered by the Android TV OS. And if you're a gamer using Google TV, you may have just gotten a major upgrade.

In PlayStation's latest PS5 update (h/t FlatpanelsHD), Sony announced that PS Remote Play is now supported on Android TV and Google TV devices running Android TV OS 12 or later. This means that you can now stream your PS5 or PS4 to your TV if you have an eligible device.

To use PS Remote Play on an eligible Android TV OS device, you need to do two things. First, download the PS Remote Play application to the device. Second, you must connect a DualSense controller to play PS5 games and a Dualshock 4 controller to play PS4 games. Unfortunately, one controller cannot be used for both consoles, but in theory, you should already have the controller you need when you purchase the console.

At this time, however, only two Google TV devices have been confirmed to work with this PS Remote Play upgrade: one is Sony's flagship OLED TV, the Sony Bravia XR A95L OLED TV. But the other device? It's the Chromecast with Google TV 4K.

What this means is that you don't need to have a Google TV to get this game upgrade. Instead, for only $49, you can turn any 4K TV into a PlayStation thanks to this update. And if you need further convincing to get the Chromecast with Google TV 4K, it's also one of our favorite streaming devices.

Using PS Remote Play is very simple. Just make sure Remote Play is enabled on the game console and that the PS Remote Play app is installed on the device. If both the console and device are connected to the same network, you should be able to stream games without any problems, although there will be occasional lag.
