While the iPhone's Live Activity feature cannot be called a new feature, the launch of the iPhone 15 means that there is a new device available to take advantage of it. This is all thanks to Dynamic Island, which has been included in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus since the iPhone Pro model.

In most cases, Live Activity is an alert that appears on the iPhone's lock screen, displaying important information about its ever-changing status. It can be anything from deliveries, sports results, timers, etc. That way, you can see at a glance what is happening and how long the delivery person has been pretending to be away.

Having a dynamic island means that live activity updates can also be displayed on the top of the phone's screen. That way, the cutout becomes more than a home for the selfie camera and Face ID sensor. And with Dynamic Island coming to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, even more people will be able to interact with Live Activities in a whole new way.

I spent some time updating the App Store to find apps that take advantage of Live Activities. While not a complete list, the following 15 apps definitely caught our eye while providing general information on how Live Activities will work with the lock screen and Dynamic Island to allow more information to be seen at a glance.

Spotify's support for Dynamic Island allows users to access music streamers without actually opening the app. Tapping on the Island brings up a mini-player at the top of the screen that allows you to see what song is playing, pause it, skip back and forth in song order, and even transfer it to another device via AirPlay.

You will need to open the app to physically search for new tracks, but at least this way you can quickly and easily control the song that is playing at any given time.

Uber dabbles in ridesharing, transportation, and food delivery, and is arguably one of the best-known services of its kind in the world. iPhone's Uber app also supports the Live Activities feature and can display ride status using Dynamic Island.

While Dynamic Island can show you how far along your ride is, the Live Activities widget provides a bit more detail. You can see the pickup time and details of the car you are scheduled to ride in without having to open the app.

Flying can be stressful. With so many slow-loading web pages and travel apps out there, it's great to be able to consolidate all of your flight information into Dynamic Island, as United Airlines does.

Integration with Live Activities displays live information about the flight, including gate details, seat numbers, and a countdown to departure time. Additionally, it provides quick access to boarding passes.

Structured is a day planner and time management app that puts all your tasks and calendar items in one place, turning them into a clear outline of what you need to do that day. The app includes a countdown clock that can be accessed from the lock screen or Dynamic Island that shows the time remaining for specific tasks.

Structured is free to download, but some features, such as notifications and integration with the built-in Reminders app, require a subscription. Users can sign up for a monthly ($2.99) or annual ($9.99) subscription, or get a lifetime membership with a $29.99 purchase.

The Flighty flight tracking app puts a lot of information at your fingertips, from flight routes to delay forecasts and weather forecasts Flighty displays arrival and departure times, gate information, flight status live activity alerts, and can bring that information to your lock screen or dynamic island.

Flighty is free to download and its version already includes a lot of important flight information. More advanced features such as delay prediction, push alerts, and live receiver tracking require a Flighty Pro subscription ($5.99/month or $47.99/year).

If you use SmartGym to track your workout routines, make sure the app supports the latest live activities. With Live Activity, you can start a timer, display it on your lock screen, and get guidance on your next set or exercise. Dynamic Island support lets you track rest and execution during your workout.

SmartGym is free to try and supports 2 routines, 10 histories, and 2 measures. A subscription ($9.99/month or $59.99/year) gives you unlimited access to all of these, plus data sync to SmartGym's cloud service.

Wakeout is a godsend for desk workers who don't want a sedentary occupation to creep into their lifestyle. The app presents exercises that can be done at your desk. For live activities, the timer moves to the phone's lock screen.

You can try Wakeout for a week before your subscription kicks in; Wakeout's monthly fee is $12.99/month, with a lower monthly fee for a one-year subscription.

Carrot Weather for iOS features a "Rain Starting Soon Live Activity" that pops up on the lock screen when rain is expected within the next hour. A rain chart displayed along with the Live Activity helps you keep track of incoming storms.

Carrot Weather is available as a free download, but you must sign up for the Premium Ultra tier of the app to use Rain Starting Soon's Live Activity.

Grocery provides a place to jot down what you need next time you go shopping, and the app's Live Activity feature keeps that list visible on the lock screen and Dynamic Island. If you decide to save a recipe in Grocery - you can, you know - there is a countdown timer that appears as a Live Activity.

Grocery is free to download, but a membership unlocks premium features such as family sharing and pantry tracking. It costs $3.99/month or $9.99/year; a $29.99 payment gives lifetime access.

Just Press Record gets right down to business when it comes to one-tap recording. When you are recording notes, lectures, interviews, or just about anything else, a controller appears on your iPhone's lock screen, providing quick access to pause or stop the recording.

Sports updates have proven to be popular fodder for Live Activities, and one of the first apps to jump on it is the eponymous Sports Alerts app. Currently supporting the four major U.S. sports leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL), Sports Alerts allows users to start Live Activities up to six hours before game time. Live activity is displayed on the lock screen, allowing users to know the score changes without having to unlock their phone.

Sports Alerts can be downloaded for free; a $4.99 in-app purchase will prevent ads from appearing for one year.

Budgeting app MoneyCoach helps you manage your spending and track your bills with an eye toward creating healthy money habits. With Live Activity, your transaction history is displayed on the lock screen, showing how much you spent in a particular category during that currency tracking period, as well as a comparison to previous spending. iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 owners can view that data in Dynamic Island.

Lumy records sunrise and sunset with an eye toward helping photographers and videographers get the perfect light shot. (This is a clue that it is a photography-focused app; one of the main things Lumy tracks is when the golden hour arrives and the lighting is most photogenic.) The app allows users to track any solar event, from Golden Hour to First Light, from the lock screen or dynamic island.
