One Piece" Season 2: Everything we know so far

Yo-ho-ho, we're all hoping for another bite of gum-gum fruit in "One Piece" Season 2.

Netflix's live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's hugely popular anime and manga series has been a huge success, surpassing records set by Netflix original series "Stranger Things" and "Wednesday Night Live" since its debut on August 31, topping streaming charts in 84 countries and to the top spot on the streaming charts in 84 countries.

The story follows the colorful ocean adventure of Monkey D. Luffy (Inaki Godoy), a rubbery boy who aspires to be the Pirate King and searches for the treasure of the legendary pirate Gold Roger, One Piece. Luffy joins the kind but shrewd thief Nami (Emily Rudd) and pirate hunter Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu) as part of the Straw Hat crew.

Now that the first adventures of the Straw Hat gang are over, fans are looking ahead to a possible season two, and while Netflix has not officially decided to produce a second season, things are looking positive for a live-action version of Monkey D. Luffy's fantastic adventure It is clear that things are looking up for the live-action version of Monkey D. Luffy's fantastic adventures. We may not have all the details yet, but here is what we know so far about "One Piece" Season 2.

Netflix has not officially authorized "One Piece" Season 2, so we don't know when we will see it. If all goes well, it could be as early as next fall. One Piece will hit streaming platforms in August 2023. If all goes well, the new set of episodes will likely have a similar release date.

According to Variety, the script for Season 2 of One Piece is ready to go, but production has been put on hold due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Studio president Becky Clements testified that new episodes could be "a year away" at the earliest from appearing on streaming: "It could be ready to air in a year to a year and a half."

That is, if it comes to fruition. However, renewal of "One Piece" for Season 2 is being considered quite positively; Netflix failed with its live-action versions of "Cowboy Bebop" and "Death Note." Cowboy Bebop" was met with a huge backlash from fans, and the series was quickly cancelled after only one season. Meanwhile, "Death Note" was made into a movie, but remained unsatisfactory in its faithful retelling of the anime and manga story; Netflix did not give anime fans much to hope after the release of these two films.

"One Piece," however, is something else entirely. It takes a more nuanced approach to bringing the story into the real world. While not perfect, fans and critics alike agree that it is the best anime adaptation Netflix has ever released. The numbers don't lie either, and the record-breaking success of "One Piece" has taken the place once occupied by Netflix's top-tier productions.

So while Netflix has not yet decided to release "One Piece" Season 2, it is likely that the next episode will be available. Thanks to positive reactions and reviews, "One Piece" was able to garner enough support to sway Netflix's potential investment in the next season. And with so many stories left to tell, the sky (or in this case, the sea) really is the limit.

Netflix remains tight-lipped about who we can expect to continue the Grand Line expedition, but if the show is renewed, it will likely feature the same cast if a second season sets sail. Straw men will likely return with most or all of these actors:

WARNING: There are spoilers for "One Piece" season 2.

The first season of "One Piece" ran through a lot of material in only eight-hour episodes. This breakneck speed allowed for a variety of storylines to be developed in the limited airtime. Since the live-action story concludes around chapter 218 of the manga, the next episode will explore the desert nation of Alabasta, unless there is a time slip or skipping over some of the existing content. One Piece moves the story along at a mile a minute, so it is commendable that so much has already been covered.

In the season finale, Luffy made several "Most Wanted" posters and Buggy the Mad Clown declared that he would kill the rubber pirates. Also making his first appearance was the diabolical Smoker, known for holding two cigars in one hand. We first saw him poking holes in Luffy's wanted poster. His name was not mentioned, but he is almost certainly one of the faces we will see next.

We will likely pick up there and watch the crew continue to grow, but there is no confirmation yet as to where the new episodes will go. There are still plenty of new faces to welcome, too, like fan-favorite characters Nico Robin and the adorable Tony Tony Tony Chopper. It's all speculation at this point, but unless Netflix decides to go off the rails and introduce an entirely new storyline, these are all developments that will take place down the road if a new season is introduced.
