iPhone 15 Pro vs. iPhone 14 Pro: The biggest upgrade is this

The new iPhone 15 Pro has many great new features, but is it that much better than the iPhone 14 Pro? Our iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro comparison breaks down all the key differences between these two Apple flagship models.

The iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999, the same as its predecessor, while offering some welcome upgrades, including a stronger and lighter titanium design, USB-C charging, and new action buttons. Apple has also improved the camera system, although it does not have a 5x telephoto zoom like the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The iPhone 14 Pro, on the other hand, is still a great phone with a powerful 48MP camera, always-on display, and convenient Dynamic Island. So is the iPhone 15 Pro upgrade worth it?

The iPhone 15 Pro will be available for pre-order on September 15, with a release date of September 22. iPhone 14 Pro has technically been discontinued and Apple has dropped the model from its lineup, but it will continue to be sold through retail stores and wireless carriers.

Apple's new iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999/£999/$1,849 AUD, the same as the iPhone 14 Pro. For this price, you get a model with 128 GB of storage. Both models can be upgraded to 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB of storage.

The iPhone 15 Pro's appearance is quite different from the iPhone 14 Pro, starting with a stronger, lighter titanium design. iPhone 15 Pro weighs just 6.6 ounces, down from 7.3 ounces in the iPhone 14 Pro.

Another major difference between the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro is the addition of an action button on the new iPhone. Instead of a mute switch, it can be used to silence calls with a long press and hold, as well as to activate the camera, flashlight, magnifier function, voice recorder, and more. The action buttons can also be customized using the shortcut application.

While not a dramatic difference, the iPhone 15 Pro has narrower bezels around the display, making videos and other content pop more. Otherwise, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro displays are very similar. Both have 6.1-inch OLED panels with 1,600 nits brightness, up to 2,000 nits in sunlight, always-on mode, and a 120 Hz refresh rate.

The iPhone 15 Pro is also the first to introduce USB-C charging, with 10 Gbps transfer speeds. iPhone 14 Pro uses Lightning.

The iPhone 14 Pro already has a powerful chip called A16 Bionic, but the new A17 Pro chip takes everything to the next level. This industry-first 3nm processor features a 6-core GPU that is up to 20% faster, a CPU that is up to 10% faster, and a Neural Engine that is up to twice as fast.

What does this mean? For one thing, better gaming. iPhone 15 Pro supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing for more realistic graphics and lighting effects. Autocorrect while typing is even faster, and the time it takes to create your own personal voice has been greatly reduced.

The iPhone 15 Pro has a 48 MP main sensor, but a new 24 MP ultra-high resolution option has been added. This means that one does not have to shoot in ProRAW mode to get great results.

The new iPhone 15 Pro is smart enough to shoot portraits without having to use Portrait mode, and portraits should be even more beautiful with the new Smart HDR that enhances lighting and colors. In addition, the Photonic Engine makes night mode portraits even more beautiful.

Another benefit is the ability to change the focus point of a photo after it has been taken, giving you great creative freedom, and if you are thinking of purchasing the Apple Vision Pro headset, you can use the main camera and the ultrawide camera simultaneously for spatial video recording with the main camera and the ultrawide camera at the same time, an upgrade is on the way.

The iPhone 15 Pro can wind up lasting longer on a charge in our tests, but the rated battery life is the same as the iPhone 14 Pro vs. That's 23 hours of video playback, 20 hours of video playback (streaming), and up to 75 hours of audio.

Unfortunately, charging speed is not rated, with both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro charging at only 20W. According to Apple's calculations, it takes 30 minutes to reach 50%.

Usually, a new iPhone means iteration. But this iPhone 15 Pro offers a significant upgrade. I am particularly impressed with the lightweight titanium design, but also appreciate the action buttons and state-of-the-art A17 Pro chip. However, the camera upgrade is not monumental, and the jump to USB-C, while welcome, does not lead to faster charging.

If you have an iPhone 14 Pro, you may want to keep using it, but if you have an older iPhone, an upgrade to the iPhone 15 Pro would definitely be worthwhile.
