Harris' debut novel has been talked about since before its publication in 2021. Television rights were acquired by Hulu ahead of a frenzied bidding war in which publisher Atria paid $1 million to acquire the workplace thriller.

Based on the author's own experiences, "The Other Black Girl" explores the everyday routines of micro-discrimination, racial marginalization, and tokenism in the predominantly white publishing world. A reality told through the prism of a gripping conspiracy thriller that draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including the contemporary horror "Get Out" and Nella Larson's 1929 novel "Passing."

Sinclair Daniel plays the hardworking Nella. When prideful Harlem native Hazel (Ashley Murray) joins Wagner Books, she is understandably delighted. However, a strange series of events coincides with Hazel's arrival. As paranoia grows toward her colleagues, she and her best friend Malaika (Brittany Adebumola) begin to learn of the company's sinister history.
