New double-tap gestures have been added to the Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.

Have you ever tried to pause your walk on your Apple Watch while drinking coffee? Ever tried to answer a phone call while cooking? Ever tried to pause your alarm while half asleep? Apple has heard our sighs of frustration and is bringing an all-new feature to the Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 next month: the double-tap gesture. Here's how it works and what you need to know.

Introduced today at Apple's Wonderlust event, the Double Tap gesture was unveiled on the new Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.

This gesture allows users to control the function they are currently operating by tapping their thumb and index finger twice in succession. It can be used to answer or hang up a call, activate a widget, control workout settings, etc.

The new gestures are designed to make it easier to control the watch on the move; the Apple Watch 9's display is 2000 nits and the Apple Watch Ultra 2's display is 3000 nits, the brightest screen in Apple's history.

Tim Cook said these are the most technical Apple Watches the brand has ever released, and he is not wrong. The gestures may not look like much on paper, but they will undoubtedly change the way we use Apple's popular wearable.

The new Apple Watches will go on sale on September 22, with the Apple Watch SE starting at $249, the Apple Watch 9 at $399, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 at $799.
