5 Best Movies Available This Weekend on Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus and More

No one wants their movie night to end in a dud. If you're wondering what to watch this weekend, we've rounded up some of the best movies available on Netflix, Disney Plus, Max, and all the other top streaming services.

September is already shaping up to be a great month for musical fans. The Little Mermaid, the latest live-action remake of the Mouse's animated library, has arrived on Disney Plus, and the earworm classic Little Shop of Horrors is back on Max. Meanwhile, last year's biggest surprise hit, "The Menu," made its first appearance on Hulu, with Meryl Streep at her peak in "The Devil Wears Prada." And Netflix has added a rare war movie that even I, a war movie hater, recommend checking out regularly: Hacksaw Ridge.

So without further ado, here are the best movies to stream now.

"The Little Mermaid" is the latest live-action remake of the Disney animated classic. It follows "Cinderella," "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin," and "Mulan," and like these remakes, it has its detractors and its fans. Notably, the critics' website Rotten Tomatoes has given "The Little Mermaid" a 67% critics' score and an audience score of 94% this year.

And, as with Disney's previous remakes, the film is more of a reimagining of Ariel's "Under the Sea" adventures than a recreation of them from one to the next. Disney made that clear from the first trailer, and some viewers were foaming at the mouth at the truly disturbing level of vitriol directed at black actress Halle Bailey.

Bailey as Ariel brings something truly fresh to the fairy tale we all know and love. Her singing ability and utterly charming screen presence are at the heart of the film. The story of an outsider yearning for another life is as familiar and comfortable as ever. In addition, the ubiquitous Lin-Manuel Miranda adds new music, making this IP looting moneymaker a little more interesting.

"Menu" is one of the best movies to watch blind. This thriller/horror film follows a group of discerning millionaires eager to dine at the Hawthorne, an upscale speakeasy-style restaurant on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest.

Hawthorne is run with extreme rigor by renowned chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes), who prepares sumptuous multi-course meals that are billed as once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The evening unfolds through the perspectives of a couple who have never met: Tyler (Nicholas Hoult), a true foodie, and Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy), who is unimpressed.

Slowly, and often through the voice of Elsa (Hong Chau), the general manager of Slowik's staff, we learn that all the guests have secrets and that the chef has ulterior motives. The chef's menu features some not-so-delicious (and often truly disturbing) dishes. Expect wild and disturbing developments.

Even if you are not normally a fan of musicals, Little Shop of Horrors is a hilarious romp full of ear-splitting scenes. Steve Martin plays a demented dentist who looks like he stepped out of Grease and sings about how much he loves to hurt people.

Rick Moranis stars in this gorgeously star-studded film as Seymour, a down-on-his-luck florist clerk who has a crush on his co-worker Audrey (Ellen Greene). Seymour comes up with the ill-fated idea of displaying a rare plant he buys during an eclipse, naming it Audrey II, in the hopes of boosting business. However, when he pricks his finger on the plant, it turns out to suck blood. As more and more customers arrive, Seymour finds himself having to keep feeding the increasingly bloodthirsty Audrey II.

The songs are ridiculously catchy, and the practical effects alone make this classic musical worth putting up with. No digital optical effects, green screen, or CGI were used to bring Audrey II to life, which made "Little Shop of Horrors" the most expensive film in Warner Bros. history at the time of its release.

The blue sweater scene from The Devil Wears Prada was recently the talk of Tiktok. (Never mind, I don't want to think about that). ) [Meryl Streep's performance as the ruthless editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly is truly iconic. The story begins when Andrea "Andy" Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries, takes a job far removed from her own as a junior assistant at a prestigious fashion magazine.

Andy admits to being clueless about fashion, but is quick to adapt to Miranda's demanding and often unreasonable requests, fetching coffee, organizing appointments, and dealing with personal and professional problems. As Andi becomes more and more absorbed in the world of high fashion, her new job puts a serious strain on her personal life and her relationship with her boyfriend Nate (played by Adrian Grenier). Only then does Andy begin to understand the sacrifices Miranda has made for her career.

I will be the first to admit that I am not a war movie buff. But "Hacksaw Ridge" is a war movie for people who don't like war movies. Part of the reason is that it is not primarily about the fighting itself, but about the extraordinary conviction and journey of Desmond Doss, a real-life WWII medic who served in the Battle of Okinawa without a weapon.

Andrew Garfield plays Doss, a conscientious objector who enlisted in the U.S. Army despite his deep commitment to pacifism, a Seventh-day Adventist creed, with a distinctly Southern charm and purity. His decision is met with skepticism and ridicule from fellow soldiers and superiors. He faces severe persecution and is even court-martialed for refusing to pick up a rifle, but is eventually cleared and joins the front lines.

There he and his fellow soldiers were thrown into one of the bloodiest battles on the Eastern Front. After a hasty retreat, Doss stays behind, risking his life to save wounded soldiers, lowering them alone down a steep cliff known as "Hacksaw Ridge" until reinforcements arrive.
