OnePlus 12 vs iPhone 15 Pro: Which flagship phone will win?

The OnePlus 12 is shaping up to be one of the best Android phones of 2024. It is already available in China, and global launch plans are expected to be announced at an event on January 23. This new OnePlus flagship is just in time to steal some thunder from the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24.

However, the OnePlus 12 appears to have more specs than an Android device. It should also be a formidable competitor to the best iPhones. So, how does the OnePlus 12 compare to the iPhone 15 Pro? Let's see how the OnePlus 12 compares to the iPhone 15 Pro.

The iPhone 15 Pro has been available since September, starting at $999 for the 128GB model and going up to $1,499 if you need 1TB of onboard storage. (As is Apple's example, you cannot insert a microSD card.)

The OnePlus 12's release date and price outside of China is currently a bit of a mystery, but it won't be long, as the Chinese company has promised a global launch event on January 23. We speculate that the price will be between $699 and $799, based on both the Chinese price and past U.S. MSRPs for the OnePlus flagship.

The OnePlus 12's 6.82-inch frame is a bit closer to the iPhone 15 Pro Max and its 6.7-inch screen, as opposed to the iPhone 15 Pro, which offers a more compact 6.1-inch display.

Despite its weight, however, the OnePlus 12 is actually quite lightweight: only 0.36 inches thin and weighing 7.76 ounces. But the iPhone 15 Pro is even lighter thanks to its new titanium shell. Apple's phone weighs in at 6.6 ounces and is only 0.325 inches thick.

As for the screen, both models offer a buttery-smooth 120Hz refresh rate ("ProMotion" in Apple parlance), but the OnePlus 12 has a slightly higher resolution: 1,440 x 3,168 compared to the iPhone 15 Pro's 1,179 x 2,556 beating the Retina panel.

The iPhone 15 Pro's panel is indeed brighter, with a peak value of 2,000 nits in direct sunlight. (We measured 1,550 nits with a light meter.) The OnePlus 12, however, boasts a peak brightness of 4,500 nits, surpassing this screen. However, the OnePlus 12 boasts a peak brightness of 4,500 nits and outperforms this screen.

In most specs, it seems that you can (probably) get more for less with OnePlus; the OnePlus 12 has 4GB to 16GB more RAM than the iPhone 15 Pro and a much larger battery. 5,400 The 5,400mAh battery should last longer than the iPhone 15 Pro's 3,274mAh battery. iPhone 15 Pro's battery life of 10 hours 53 minutes is nearly an hour longer than the average smartphone, but it does not make our best battery life list. It does not. (The OnePlus 12's predecessor, the OnePlus 11, is also on that list.)

There is also the issue of charging speed: the iPhone 15 Pro slogs along at a 20W charging speed, while the OnePlus 12 is a whopping 100W, at least outside the US The company claims fast charging. In the past, Apple's own "A" series chipsets have been significantly faster than Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipsets in benchmarks, but there are signs that this may be reversed with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Of course, the iPhone may still get better performance. There is, after all, an inherent advantage to Apple manufacturing the operating system and chipset. On paper, however, the OnePlus 12 could be a formidable competitor.

Cameras have sometimes been a weakness of OnePlus phones, but the OnePlus 11 is much improved, and early indications suggest that the OnePlus 12 will be even better, as it seems to borrow most of its camera specifications from the foldable OnePlus Open In addition to the 50MP, f/1.6 main camera, the OnePlus 12 will feature a 48MP, f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle sensor and a 64MP, f/2.6 telephoto lens with 3x zoom.

The iPhone 15 Pro is no slouch when it comes to cameras, either, with a 48MP, f/1.78 main camera and a 12MP, f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle sensor, capped off by a 12MP, f/2.8 telephoto lens that also offers 3x optical zoom.

While the OnePlus appears to have more capable hardware, Apple's image processing packs more of a punch in the setup, and the iPhone often ranks high on our best camera phones list. To get a clear answer here, we need to try the OnePlus 12.

On paper, the OnePlus 12 looks very powerful, but there are a few unknowns: the new phone's price, camera performance, and comfort in use.

The iPhone 15 Pro is here now and is truly amazing - though definitely expensive. If you're happy with Android, it's definitely worth the wait until our full review after the OnePlus 12's global launch.
