At the end of each year, it is customary for many businesses, schools, and even websites to give their employees time off to celebrate the vacation season and welcome in the New Year. But there is no off-season in wrestling.

And while some things have changed as business and recording technology has evolved over the years, Tony Kahn and All Elite Wrestling still intend to ring in the New Year with a bang.

On December 30, AEW will host its inaugural Worlds End pay-per-view event at the legendary Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island, NY. The New Year's Eve show is set to be the finale of the promotion's biggest year to date, so there should be some unforgettable action in their 2023 final broadcast.

Shortly after Worlds End was announced in October, AEW announced a special attraction to climax the event. Dubbed the Continental Classic, similar to NJPW's prestigious G1 Climax, this 12-player round-robin tournament featured the company's top stars competing in Dynamite, Rampage, and Collision to earn points and qualify for the finals at the Nassau Coliseum The tournament was for the company's top stars to compete in Dynamite, Rampage, and Collision to earn points and qualify for the finals at Nassau Coliseum. Eddie Kingston, who competed in the tournament, was crowned the modern-day Triple Crown Champion of professional wrestling for the Ring of Honor World Title and the New Japan Strong Openweight Title.

So far, the grueling tournament has featured some incredible matches, including the long-awaited rematch between longtime rivals Kingston and Claudio Castagnoli of the Blackpool Combat Club, the first-ever meeting between John Moxley and Swerve Strickland have been taking place. As of this writing, eight players are potential winners of this amazing tournament. But while fans would love to see Mad King retain his title and add another title to his trophy case, the leader of the Mogul Embassy seems to really go places. Strickland has been hungrier than ever since he was fired from WWE in 2021. And in the past year, his feud with Hangman Page has reached a whole new level, as the Swerve won two hard-fought battles against the Elite Cowboy in full gear with Lesson Dream. It is clear that Strickland is ready to face the AEW World Champion, and winning the Continental Classic is probably the fastest way to get to the front of the line.

Unfortunately, it is Kenny Omega who is not ready to be a champion. Along with his partner in the Don Callis Family feud, Chris Jericho, The Cleaner was supposed to challenge AEW World Tag Team Champions Ricky Starks and Big Bill. However, two weeks before their match at World's End, the former AEW World Champions announced that they would be out indefinitely, citing certain pain. It was later revealed that Omega was suffering from diverticulitis, and while there is precedent for one wrestler defending the tag team titles alone in AEW and ROH, it is unclear what action will be taken in this match. Either Jericho will get another partner to replace Omega, or the title challenge will be postponed for now and a new challenger will emerge; AEW's tag team division is currently very full, and any team in the locker room could face Starks and Bill. For the time being, however, the fate of this match is up in the air.

Finally, the main event of Worlds End will feature MJF and Samoa Joe in a rematch for the AEW World Title. He then vacated his Ring of Honor television title and pulled out all the stops to allow Max to defend his title on Long Island. But the latter is certainly being tested as MJF's devil-masked assailants target the champion and anyone associated with him week after week. Theories abound as to who is under the mask, but the truth remains a mystery.

But even without this new obstacle in his path to retaining his title, MJF has said in interviews that he has been plagued by lingering injuries. Joe will want to face the champion at 100% condition, but when the bell rings, he will most likely use every advantage he has to win the match. Since becoming All Elite, the veteran has reigned over the historic TV title and proven himself to be the King of Television. After dealing with health issues, an injured partner/best friend, and apparently literal demons, MJF is currently stretched too thin. He's pretty bent out of shape, but Samoa Joe's coquina clutch at AEW Worlds End may break Maxwell Jacob Friedman. And if he does, there will be a whole new AEW king as we enter 2024.
