New update to OnePlus Open brings major improvements

With the OnePlus 12 deadline looming, fans of other OnePlus models may have thought they wouldn't see another update for a while. However, it seems that an update is in the works for the OnePlus Open, although it may not be what some owners are hoping for.

One of the common complaints about the OnePlus Open was that it was released with Android 13 instead of the newer Android 14. This left many buyers waiting to see what the future holds. Recently, a post on OnePlus Open: Chat Room revealed an upcoming update, but it is not Android 14.

The update, given the official name CPH2551_13.2.0.203 (EX01), is based on the Oxygen OS 13.2 update. This update, as well as the December 2023 Android security update, provides several obvious software updates to improve the usability of the phone.

First, system stability and touch control algorithms are said to be improved to enhance the user experience. In our review we did not find many problems with the touch controls, but that is always an aspect that can vary from user to user.

The update is also reported to reduce power consumption when the device is idle or when certain apps are in use. While this would be a great addition for any phone, it is also interesting because we found that the battery life of the OnePlus Open is already very good. In our review, the OnePlus Open had the longest overall battery life of any folding phone, including the Pixel Fold.

The update also has several camera improvements. It appears to fix a shutter lag issue that has been reported to occur when the night view toggle is turned off. It also reportedly fixes an issue where the "Retouch," "Filter," "Resolution," and "Flash" functions did not respond to taps.

Finally, the update will fix an issue where the main screen would sometimes get stuck when trying to take a selfie using the rear camera after turning on dual preview. The last thing said to be done in the update is to improve overall network stability and compatibility.

While this is not the Android 14 update that many users have been asking for, there are a number of things that will help improve the user experience on the OnePlus Open. Bug fixes and security updates may not be the most prominent improvements, but they are important ones. Expect to learn more about Android 14 for the OnePlus Open in the New Year.
