Google Pixel 8 Pro to include camera features missing since Pixel 5

The Google Pixel 8 Pro appears to have brought back a long-lost feature, ultra-wide-angle astrophotography.

Originally, this mode was only offered on the Pixel 8 Pro's main camera, either in 1x or 2x mode. However, Android Authority discovered that the Google Pixel 8 Pro's ultra-wide camera can be used in night-sight mode to shoot in astrophotography mode (with a star icon on the shutter button).

While available on the Pro model, ultra-wide-angle astrophotography does not appear to be back on the standard Google Pixel 8. The Pixel 8 Pro uses a 48 MP unit, which is larger than the Pixel 8's 12 MP sensor and can capture more light and detail Capture more light and detail.

Astrophotography with an ultrawide camera was originally announced by Googe in 2019 with the Pixel 4 (above). However, the ultra-wide-angle astrophotography feature was removed without warning from the Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G in 2020.

Google did not give an official reason for the removal, but it is speculated that one of the main reasons was user complaints of poor image quality in general. However, this may be a factor that Google's improved AI processing will correct and hopefully improve.

The latest Google Pixel phones heavily advertise their AI editing software, which includes features such as Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur to help fix problems with images after they are taken. Using the same system for astrophotography is a good idea, but for best results, a tripod or other stable stand should be used during recording.

There is an argument that astrophotography is a niche addition and not a selling point for most people. However, it does indicate that Google is attempting to blend the old and the new in regards to their software. The big question now is whether the AI in the Google Pixel 8 Pro has genuinely improved this functionality, and whether it will spill over to the Pixel 8, Pixel 7a, or any future inexpensive Pixel phones.
