iPhone 16 leaks, all four models with Apple's new A18 chip?

iOS 17 has only been out for a few months, but Apple is already hard at work on the next iPhone software update, iOS 18. Apple is a creature of habit, so the first beta version will appear in June after WWDC 2024, and the full release should appear around the same time as iPhone 16.

MacRumors has spoken to sources who have early information on iOS 18 codenamed "Crystal." This code apparently contains references to four unannounced models of the iPhone and is consistent with our expectations of the iPhone 16 range. These phones are the D47 and D48 (iPhone 16 and 16 Plus), along with the D93 and D94 (iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max).

As you may have noticed, this does not include the fifth iPhone, the long-rumored iPhone 16 Ultra. Rumors have divided opinion as to whether the iPhone Ultra will be a standalone device or whether Apple plans to rebrand the iPhone 16 Pro Max instead. If this information is anything to go by, it suggests that the former will not happen in 2024. Nevertheless, the possibility of a name change cannot be ruled out.

The most interesting part of this information, which gives us an early glimpse of the iOS 18 code, is that all four models are apparently going to use the same chip - t8140. The codename is "Tahiti," which is apparently the internal name for the A18 chip.

We have heard rumors about this before, suggesting that Apple would not split the iPhone 16 series between the A17 and A18 chipsets. The question is whether all four devices will have the same A18 chip.

It is quite possible that Apple will put the basic A18 chip in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus and the more powerful A18 Pro in the Pro model. At this early stage, however, it cannot be said either way.

iOS 18 code also suggests that the iPhone 16 will feature Broadcom's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules. However, MacRumors has found no other noteworthy information, mainly because iOS 18 development is premature and contains no notable changes, according to MacRumors.

It will likely be some time before we hear the first official information about iOS 18 and the iPhone 16 series. But you can stay up to date on all the latest news and rumors in our iPhone 16 hub.
