Chrome has greatly enhanced its multitasking capabilities on Android - what does this mean?

Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode is a great way to multitask on Android, and the good news is that Google is getting ready to extend PiP and offer the opportunity to shrink Chrome custom tabs to a small floating window on the screen.

A Chrome custom tab is a browser tab opened from another app. So when you open a link from an email or social media post, it will appear in a browser window within that app, not the Chrome app. Also, unlike Chrome, these windows do not allow you to minimize specific tabs as PiP windows.

Twitter/X user Assemble Debug discovered that Chrome for Android has added a button for this purpose. This allows Chrome custom tabs to be instantly minimized to a floating window.

The regular Chrome browser already has this functionality, but it is fairly limited, and only for minimizing full-screen videos; as Android Police points out, the addition of this functionality to Chrome Custom Tabs means a little more accessibility. As Android Police points out, the addition of this feature to Chrome Custom Tabs means that it will be a bit more accessible. Minimizing text to a small window won't be very functional, but it may allow for quicker and easier access to certain web pages if you need to move on to something else for a while.

PiP support for Chrome Custom Tabs has been discovered for some time, but was only available in Chrome Canary 121. Unfortunately, this feature is not yet available to all and is disabled by default. This means that to access it, certain flags must be enabled, which can be found in Chrome's Flags menu.

You can also wait for Google to activate the flag. We don't know when that will be. Hopefully soon.
