Although the launch of Apple's iPhone 16 lineup is still some way off, plans for the iPhone 16 Pro model's camera appear to be taking shape. And that could mean a significant upgrade to the rear camera array.

According to Weibo user Instant Digital, Apple plans to include two 48MP camera sensors in the iPhone 16 Pro. Since the iPhone 14 Pro introduced in 2022, Pro models have used a 48MP main lens. However, this would be a big step up for the ultra-wide-angle lens, which Apple has used for years with a 12MP sensor.

According to Instant Digital, Apple plans to use its "pixel binning" technology in the ultra-wide lens, allowing for improved performance in low-light environments. This technology effectively combines four small pixels into one "superpixel," allowing more light to be captured without the need for additional components. This is comparable to the performance already available in the iPhone 15 Pro's main camera.

It is unclear from the Weibo report exactly how Instant Digital obtained information about Apple's plans. There is also no way to verify this claim, as Apple is always reluctant to talk about future launches.

However, there have been previous reports about Apple's plans to make significant improvements to the iPhone 16 Pro's camera, including a claim that the company is indeed planning to upgrade to a 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera on the Pro phone this fall.

Earlier reports claimed that Apple was considering upgrading the telephoto lens on the iPhone 16 Pro to the same one introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro Max this fall. This telephoto camera features a tetra prism design and can extend the zoom up to 5x; the iPhone 15 Pro has only a 3x zoom.

The new Weibo post only suggested that the iPhone 16 Pro's telephoto lens will use a 12MP sensor, which has the same megapixel rating as the telephoto camera on both iPhone 15 Pro models.

Apple will no doubt be forced to make some camera improvements to the 2024 iPhone; by the time the iPhone 16 is released, we will have already seen the Galaxy S24 lineup. And the Galaxy S24 Ultra is rumored to have its own camera improvements, with a larger main camera sensor to capture more light and a 50MP telephoto lens replacing one of the current Ultra model's 10MP zoom cameras. the Galaxy s24 Ultra Ultra wide lens is expected to remain at 12MP.
