How durable is the OnePlus Open? More than you can imagine

If you're going to spend nearly $2,000 on a folding smartphone, you'll want it to last. You don't want the screen to crack at the slightest gust of wind, or to tumble to the sidewalk and be severely damaged. That's where the durability tests come in, and today, the OnePlus Open is at that drop point.

YouTuber Zack Nelson, aka JerryRigEverything, is known for putting phones through their paces, among other things. Recently, he got his hands on a OnePlus Open and put the foldable phone through its usual scratch, burn, and ingress test. As a result, OnePlus' most expensive phone scored pretty well.

The video points out that OnePlus is a bit bland when it comes to durability. Not a good thing when this kind of money is at stake. But JerryRigEverything's tests are supposed to simulate years of use, so it's nice to hear that things are coming out (relatively) okay.

Past OnePlus phones have typically been noted to start getting scratches at Mohs level 6 picks and deeper grooves at level 7; the OnePlus Open is no exception, with the outer display protected by a ceramic guard.

Sadly, the inner display begins to scratch at level 2 and can have deeper grooves with something as simple as a human fingernail. As with other folding phones, the inner plastic display appears to be quite fragile.

The outer metal is made of aluminum, while sturdier, fancier materials like titanium are used inside the phone. Needless to say, aluminum is easily scratched by a knife blade. The camera bump, compared to the size of the dinner plate, performed quite well in the scratch test, as did the rear glass panel. The plastic flash module was not so lucky.

Testing the hinge's "million folds" would be nearly impossible outside of a lab, but we threw a large amount of dirt into the middle of the OnePlus Open to see what happens when the OnePlus Open is closed. As a result, no debris was able to get into the hinge gears.

Under the flame of a lighter, the outer display lasted about 25 seconds before a white scorch mark became visible. The inner screen began to burn and turn black within only 5 seconds.

The masterpiece of the durability test was the state of the OnePlus open when it was attempted to be bent backward. The phone stayed in place and did not break when bent in the wrong direction; JRE noted that the screen was slightly stretched and did not close as well as before, but it did not snap in half and still worked.

So there is growing evidence that if you want a folding phone, you might want to get the OnePlus Open. Not only is it the cheapest book-style foldable you can buy right now, but its multitasking ability and long-lasting battery are just two of the reasons we consider it the best foldable phone. The durability is just the icing on the cake, meaning it will last quite a while.
