New HBO and Max Shows for December 2023 - All the New Shows and Movies to Watch

December means cold weather and holiday cheer, so it's the perfect time to cozy up on the couch and check out new shows from HBO and Max.

This month, comedians Leo Reich and Gary Gulman have a new stand-up special, plus an original documentary about a racially charged Boston murder and the making of the upcoming musical adaptation of The Color Purple. The popular shows "The Gilded Age," "Julia," and "Rap Sh.t" all conclude their latest seasons this month.

New releases may slow down in December as viewers focus on reviewing their holiday favorites, but there is still plenty of original content to check out on Max, one of the best streaming services. Here are a few new releases on Max this month that you don't want to miss.

It is one thing for documentary filmmakers and photojournalists to take a hard look at the trauma of others, but it takes extraordinary courage for such artists to turn the lens on themselves. In this film, eight years in the making, photographer and journalist Amanda Mustard delves into her own family's sexual abuse by her grandfather. She confronts other family members and her grandfather himself, revealing lies and denials that have festered for decades. Mustard uses filmmaking as a way to expose and break the generational chain of abuse. After screening at prestigious film festivals such as South by Southwest and the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam to critical acclaim, the film debuted on HBO and Max.

The range of what can be done in standup comedy has expanded greatly in recent years, and British comedian Leo Reich is a prime example. He honed his first special performance material at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and at New York's Off-Broadway Theatre. Reich's shows are a mix of performance art and traditional comedy, combined for a unique comedic experience. Reich incorporates musical numbers and stage effects into his shows, along with the honest and personal storytelling that is the hallmark of modern standup comedy. Produced by the renowned independent film studio A24, this special edition is yet another testament to its quality and artistic ambition.
