Microsoft is currently testing a new energy-saving mode for Windows 11. Currently, the OS has a battery saver option, but this new mode will "extend" and "enhance" this option. This should not only save the batteries of the best windows laptops, but should even reduce the amount of energy consumed by the best PCs.

This feature is currently being tested on the Windows Insider Program's Canary Channel. As detailed in the blog post, the new Energy Saver option can be toggled on and off from Quick Settings in the system tray or set to run automatically when the device reaches a certain battery percentage. Microsoft states that enabling this feature may result in slower performance.

Even though it is optimized to extend battery life, Energy Saver works on both laptops and plugged-in computers. This means that not only does it save energy, but it may also lower your electric bill if you have large power-hungry devices in your home.

It is not known if or when Microsoft will make this feature available to all Windows 11 users. As mentioned above, this feature is being tested in the Windows Insider Canary Channel, which previews features and updates that will take a long time to be released to the general public. In other words, if the company decides to release this feature, it may be some time before it is available to the general public.

Hopefully, this enhanced energy saving mode will eventually see the light of day. I test and review laptops for a living, and I can assure you that Windows laptops generally do not last as long as the best MacBooks on a single charge. I typically need to charge a MacBook after a day or two of use. By comparison, Windows laptops need to be charged daily and, at least in my experience, need to be plugged in. I welcome any feature that can extend the battery life of a Windows laptop - not to mention the potential to save on electricity costs.
