12 DC Movies Coming to Netflix in December - What to Stream and What to Skip

To watch DC superhero movies (aka DCEU), you usually have to go to Max. But starting December 1, Max will no longer be the only option among the best streaming services to watch Superman, Batman, and many other DC Universe characters.

That's because starting next month, 12 DCEU movies will be available for streaming on Netflix, and while the sequel to "Aquaman" won't be available in December, there's plenty for comic geeks and casual viewers alike. The biggest standout would be "Batman," one of my favorite movies of last year, but others like "Wonder Woman" are great as well.

Unfortunately, like the Marvel films, some of these superhero movies are not worth your time. Unlike Marvel, some of them are truly awful. In fact, one of them is the worst movie I have ever seen. So, here are the DC movies you need to stream and the DC movies you need to skip when they arrive on Netflix on December 1.

"Man of Steel" is Zack Snyder's first entry into the DCEU. Not only did it reboot the character of Superman, but it became known as the "Snyderverse" and culminated in "Justice League. Starring Henry Cavill as Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman, the film is a perfect superhero flick and a perfect way to spend a weekend afternoon. I'm much more in agreement with the audience consensus of 3.9 out of 5 stars on Rotten Tomatoes than the harsh consensus of the critics.

"Man of Steel" is perfect, but "Wonder Woman" is truly wonderful. Starring Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, Wonder Woman is both a fun origin story and a solid World War I period piece. Plus, the on-screen chemistry between Chris Pine as Steve Trevor and Gadot is worth watching. If you liked "Captain America," The First Avenger If you liked "The First Avenger," you will almost certainly like "Wonder Woman.

If you want to see something fun from the DC Universe, these next two films top the list. Unlike "Bird of Prey," however, "Shazam" is more of a family movie. With Zachary Levi playing the adult superhero Shazam and Asher Angel playing his 14-year-old alter ego, "Shazam" is certainly another origin story, but it has a different tone than the rest of the DCEU's work and is frankly refreshing.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is both an origin story and not. We've already met Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn as the Joker's counterpart in Suicide Squad, but in Birds of Prey she comes out of her shell and makes new friends. It's fun, it's wild, and it's got a great cast. No, it's not "Citizen Kane," but it's worth watching while it's on Netflix.

Don't confuse this DC film by James Gunn with the 2016 film by David Ayer. If you confuse them, you may regret watching the wrong movie. But if you chose the right film, be warned - this film is violent. That said, it is probably my second favorite film on this list. And while it is technically a sequel to 2016's "Suicide Squad," you don't need to have seen the previous film to enjoy this one.

Batman was my favorite movie for the first few months of 2022. It's an early Batman but not an origin story, and Robert Pattinson's dark and brooding portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman manages to be something new compared to other dark and brooding portrayals of Bruce Wayne/Batman. It's a little too long, to be sure, but as long as you pause for bathroom breaks, you should have a good time.

Yes, I saw this movie only because Keanu Reeves voiced Batman. But this animated adventure is not about the superheroes of the DC Universe, it's about their pets. Kate McKinnon's performance as Lulu, the evil, hairless guinea pig, is also excellent. It's at the bottom of the list of DC movies, but it's family friendly if you need it.

I've also seen The Chernobyl Diaries and this is the worst movie I've ever seen. The story falls flat and the acting is even worse, especially in the climactic scenes. The Ultimate Edition that came out later is said to be a little better, but since this is the theatrical version, it doesn't even get that benefit. Please don't spend 152 minutes of your life on this movie.

Unlike the sequel, the original Suicide Squad is not worth your time. Before its release, it seemed like an interesting development for the DCEU, but upon seeing the finished product, most people, myself included, were disappointed. In short, the film is a bore, and the longer version of that opinion is that it is a tedious mess. Skip this one and watch the James Gunn-directed sequel instead.

As another case of a film that needed a director's cut for improvement, Zack Snyder's "Justice League" is a skip for me. I know some fans love the film, but I agree with the critics. It's too slow at times and not enough to make me care what happens to any of the characters. And like "Batman vs Superman: Rise of Justice," it's still a bad movie because Netflix is distributing the theatrical version.

"Wonder Woman: 1984," while not as awful as the three films we've covered so far, is honestly the most disappointing of the bunch; it fails to live up to the promise of the first film, and the on-screen chemistry between Gal Gadot and Chris Pine falls a bit flat. There are a lot of slow, tedious twists and turns, and the ending doesn't do enough to make the journey worthwhile. Again, this is not a terrible movie, but it can still be skipped.

Okay, this is the only movie on this list that I haven't seen because, frankly, I no longer have the patience to watch mediocre superhero movies. And from what I have read and heard, "Shazam. Wrath of the Gods" is in the mediocre category. While it retains some of the charm of the first "Shazam" film, most critics have described it as less satisfying than its predecessor.

Like "Wonder Woman: 1984," this film is a case of a sequel getting lazy and failing to build on the more original and engaging first film. Not bad in and of itself, but not worth your time either.
