Five new "Max" films over 85% at Rotten Tomatoes.

The weather is getting nicer, but Max is making staying home more appealing this month with a slate of new films, including a number of critically acclaimed hits.

We've picked out a selection of new movies coming to Max in April 2024 that have received high scores of 85% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes. Of course, a high rating on a review aggregation site is no guarantee that you will like the film, but it is a useful indicator of a film that has been endorsed by people who make their living evaluating films.

The best new-to-max movies for June 2024 span a variety of genres, from a whimsical comedy about a toymaker struggling through the American immigration process to one of the best martial arts films of all time. This month's streaming service has something for everyone.

Considered the best film of Adam Sandler's career, "Uncut Gems" is a thriller that will stick with you long after the credits roll. Sandler is at the top of his game as Howard Ratner, a nagging jeweler whose gambling addiction has left his family and career in tatters.

With debts mounting and angry collectors closing in, things finally begin to look up when he acquires a black opal in the rough, smuggled in from Ethiopia. A business associate and NBA star friend convinces Howard to lend him the gem for good luck in the big game, but the gem is not returned. Based on actor Greg Sestero's memoir of the same name, "The Disaster Artist" is a wild comedy that tells a story stranger than fiction behind the absolute flop that was 2003's "Room". Often cited as the worst movie ever made, "Room" is a classic "so bad, it's good" film, thanks to illogical direction, ridiculous acting, and a script full of bizarre quips.

"Disaster Artist" celebrates "Room" by taking a sincere look at the friendship between the stars and why this flop was made in the first place. Aspiring actor Greg, played by Dave Franco, moves to LA to make it big in the 90s. His life takes a turn when he meets the eccentric Tommy Wiseau (played by his brother James Franco, who also directs) in acting class; the two quickly become friends and decide to make a film together, which is a film about a young man who is a "citizen's keeper" and a "citizen's keeper. The film would become known as the "Citizen Kane" of terrible movies.

Even if you've never seen "Crouching Dragon," you've probably seen at least one film that influenced it. This breathtakingly beautiful epic is set in 19th century Qing dynasty China, where swordsman Li Mubai (Chow Yun-fat) and machete-wielding warrior Yu Shu-lien (Michelle Yeoh) must keep their feelings for each other secret. She was engaged to his best friend, but when that friend died, they were unable to confess their love.

But when Moo Bai decides to retire, his request that Shu Lien deliver his symbolic sword to his benefactor sets off a chain of events that changes everything. No matter how the action and drama pile up, director Ang Lee makes every shot picturesque. Any director can make an action film with great fight scenes, but infusing artistic vision and characters simmering in romance, that's how you leave your mark.

Genre Adventure/Action Rotten Tomatoes Score: 98 Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen, "50/50" is the rare film that strikes the perfect balance between buddy comedy and emotional drama. In the film, loosely based on the real-life experiences of cancer survivor and screenwriter Will Reiser, Gordon-Levitt plays Adam, a mild-mannered radio host who has been diagnosed with a 50-50 chance of survival.

He and his outspoken best friend Kyle (Rogen) embark on a journey of recovery, and he does his best to keep Adam's morale up through chemotherapy. Meanwhile, the film explores the complex relationship between youth and parenthood and examines what it means to finally embrace maturity as one nears the end of one's twenties.

This surreal comedy is not for everyone, but if your sense of humor is a little off, you'll have a good time. Breakout "SNL" screenwriter Julio Torres directs and stars as Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador who lives in New York City. [His ideas are unconventional, to say the least: the kids in the cabbage patch have smartphones, suggesting they have a life outside of play; the Barbie dolls cross their fingers to add "tension"; the slinky doesn't move on its own, encouraging the kids to embrace the journey rather than the destination Do. But as their work visas expire, assisting an unstable man (Tilda Swinton) who has been banished from the art world is their only hope of staying in the country and realizing their dreams.
