Logitech MX Ink can draw thin air on Metaquest 3 - here's how it works

The first "Made for Meta" product is a big product for MR artists and comes from Logitech. Announced before launch at META Connect2024, MX Ink is a Mixed Reality (MR) stylus that lets you easily create 3D art with Meta Quest3 or Quest2.

Launching at Launching129/£125, the pen itself may seem a bit chunky, but it's about holding a whole lot of impressive technology that we get in. And that "Made for Meta" label is important because it brings collaboration between the design and engineering teams of both companies to integrate directly into Meta's configuration controls.

Logitech makes a high claim that MX Ink "seamlessly transitions from 2D space to 3D space" with the same low latency as Metaquest controllers. To blend both of these dimensions, the company came up with something very nifty — along with its pressure-sensitive nib (with replaceable tips), there is a pressure-sensitive button on the barrel for when drawing in thin air.

That means you can properly and accurately control the ink flow, but the pen's haptic feedback engine provides a nice haptic touch of pen drawing in space. There is a close relationship between Logitech and Meta in terms of setting it up.This is because the first pairing provides custom tutorials and settings backed up to Quest's system software for button remapping and pressure curve customization.

Software support has also made an impressive start, and you can apply for a developer kit. Outside of the usual suspects just below, you can use MX Ink with Adobe Substance Modeler and Elucis, along with the PC VR app used wirelessly via Quest Link cable or air Link:

So there are additional accessories to snap up. These come in the form of an MX dock — a nice charging inkwell to refill it — and a drawing surface in the form of an MX mat.

With Meta set for a proper launch at Connect2024, we expect this to be the first of several made for Meta products to be seen at the show. Who knows - we can even see the hotly anticipated budget tier Metaquest 3S make its debut too.

One thing is clear, and it's that Meta is really steering you into making MR headsets more than just watching and playing with cool stuff. The company is jumping into this battle with Apple Vision Pro to be at the forefront of productivity in space computing.

Time will tell whether Cupertino will retaliate with its own creative accessories for AVP!
