Review of New Balance 1080v13

The New Balance 1080 is the brand's everyday running shoe, perfect for easy miles or longer training runs. Soft and comfortable, the shoe has been around for 13 years, long enough to have a loyal fan base of runners. With the 1080v12, New Balance made a major change to the shoe, and it continues with the 1080v13. It is softer, more comfortable, and lighter than other luxury everyday running shoes on the market.

But what has changed between the 1080v12 and 1080v13? Who is this running shoe best suited for, and how does it compare to the best running shoes on the market like the Nike Invincible 3 or the Asics Gel Nimbus 25? Read our review of the New Balance 1080v13.

The New Balance 1080v13 has been available since October 13, 2023. The shoe will cost $165/£160 and appears to be available in the same wide range of sizes and widths as the 1080v12. Women's sizes are US 5-13 (UK 3-9), men's sizes are US 7-16 (UK 6.5-14), and there are three shoe widths: standard, wide, and extra wide.

The shoe is slightly more expensive than the 1080v12, which was $159/£145 at launch. This puts the 1080v13 in about the same price range as the Asics Gel Nimbus 25 and the Nike Invincible 3.

With the 1080v12, New Balance returned to a more traditional design and fit based on runner feedback from previous versions. As a result, runners who have worn these shoes have found them to be very comfortable. [You can really come across it as you can in fact we promise, anyone can quickly forget about just how seemingly exactly {} these seemingly ignore a person's. My normal running shoe size is UK5 (US7), but New Balance shoes feel small, so I sized up to UK5.5.

However, the 1080v13 does not have that problem. They still run comfortably, but perhaps with more room than necessary in the toe box. I would say the shoe fits true to size, but it runs larger than other New Balance running shoes.

Upper

The engineered mesh upper of the 1080v13 is similar to what we have seen on previous versions of the shoe. It is also made from the brand's "hypo knit" material, which is stretchy and comfortable across the top of the foot. It also has reinforcement in the areas that need the most support.

The tongue is nicely padded across the foot and there is a good amount of cushioning around the collar for a super plush, super comfortable shoe. I had no issues with chafing or rubbing when testing the shoe and am excited about New Balance's decision to move away from the stiff heel counter we saw on the 1080v11. According to New Balance, the 1080v13 has more of that fresh foam x midsole foam and the stack height is larger, yet the shoe is lighter. My 1080v12 weighed 260g (9.2 oz) at UK 5/US 7, whereas the 1080v13 weighs 218g (7.7 oz) - this may not sound like a big difference, but you will notice it underfoot.

The Fresh Foam X midsole is definitely softer and lighter than before, giving it a bit more versatility than other iterations of this shoe. It is very plush and you get a good amount of sink-in comfort when you first put the shoe on, yet it is still resilient enough to feel fun when running - it is not so spongy that you lose responsiveness while running.

It's definitely good for longer miles with ease, but it's sharp enough to wear 1080v13 while picking up the pace. | to be able to you really come across that you can do it, in fact we promise, anyone can quickly forget about these seemingly exactly how {} people just disregard.

Outsole

The outsole of the 1080v13 has also been changed from the 1080v12. Both the geometry of the shoe as well as the pattern of the blown rubber, which is imagined to provide more grip on wet concrete. According to New Balance, the new outsole design came from research conducted by the New Balance Sports Research Lab. The brand claims the rocket was strengthened to increase forefoot stiffness and improve transition between strides.

Underfoot, I found the shoe did feel less awkward than previous versions, which did not really compete with other cushioned running shoes on the market. However, I immediately liked the sharpness of the 1080v13. [But I immediately liked the sharpness of the 1080v13. I have tested the New Balance 1080v13 in various sessions and was impressed with the shoe. It was very different from previous versions and felt similar to something like the Asics Gel Nimbus 25. They are light, bouncy, and comfortable underfoot. [I was able to pick up the pace a bit for the tempo sessions without feeling like I had to work harder to run faster in these shoes.

I am very surprised by the 1080v13. They are comfortable running shoes and can easily be worn for anything from a 5k to a marathon. They are a great example of what is expected of an everyday running shoe and remind me that I don't need multiple running shoes in my closet to get a good workout for a race.

[13] The New Balance 1080v13 is by far my favorite iteration of the New Balance 1080 to date. I love the lightweight feel of the shoe paired with the comfort of the plush cinch-in. I would argue that the ZoomX is still softer and a bit more performance based, but that's up there with the ZoomX foam used in the Nike Invincible 3.

If you are trying to choose between the 1080v12 and 1080v13, I would go with the new shoes. More comfortable, more versatile, and I really enjoyed running in these shoes.

If I were trying to choose between the New Balance 1080v13 and the Asics Gel Nimbus 25, I think the New Balance feels a little more lively on my feet and a little more versatile. If you're looking for a cushioned, everyday running shoe, this is a great option.
