Top of 7 New Movies to Watch on Netflix, Prime Video and more (6/18-24th)

A lot of new movies have arrived on some of the best streaming services of the week. Netflix is taking the lead, but Prime Video and Peacock also have fresh flicks available.

This week's biggest new streaming release is on premium video-on-demand, as Ryan Reynolds and the charming Family feature "IF" make the leap from theater to home streaming. Other top new movies to watch include Netflix's Jessica Alba's "Trigger Warning" and Peacock's 4th film in the "Kung Fu Panda" series.

If you're looking for something fresh to look at this week, we've rounded up the top picks below to save you time. And be sure to check out a roundup of the best new TV shows of the week and a roundup of Netflix's new features.

Director John Krasinski exchanges the horror of "quiet places" with colorful family adventures in the form of "IF."This fantasy comedy blends animation and live action and centers on a precocious 12-year-old Bee (Kayleigh Fleming) who is forced to grow fast after her mother's death and father's hospitalization. Settling in her grandma's New York apartment, Bea meets a grumpy upstairs neighbor named Cal (Ryan Reynolds) and discovers that she can see other people's imaginary friends, known as IFs.

These imaginary friends include Blue (Steve Carell's voice), a large furry purple creature, and Blossom (Phoebe Waller Bridge), a humanoid butterfly. Teaming up with the reluctant Cal, the two embark on a quest to reunite these forgotten If's with their (now adult) children. "IF" could not win over critics, but the audience felt it was very attractive. The film holds an impressive 49% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a score of 88% from critics.

Rachel Sennott proves her comedy chops with hilarious flicks like "Bottoms" and "Bodies Bodies" but "I think the funny thing is that the comedy drama comes from writer/director Aly Pankiu, and Cenot is a stand・up comedy." I see a former nanny in Dean playing Sam, who is working on PTSD.

According to the story via flashback, in the current day of the family where Sam worked to build a particularly close bond with his 10・year-old daughter Brooke (Olga Petsa), Brooke goes missing and Sam is considering helping with the search effort. Addressing serious subjects with a witty edge, "I used to be Funny" is a film worth professionally balancing comedy and drama.

The "Barbie" movie took over last summer, and now Netflix is inviting audiences back to Barbieland, but for a very different story. This documentary explores the story of Barbie you may not have heard before, as it focuses on the creation of the first black Barbie in the 1980s.Directed by Lageria Davis, "Black Barbie" chronicles the industry-changing impact of 3 women working at Mattel who are believed to be leading the launch of the first Black Barbie: Beulah Mae Mitchell, Kitty Black Perkins and Stacey McBride Irby.

This Netflix original document, featuring insider interviews with people present during this pivotal moment in toy history, is a fascinating look at the creation of the iconic toy. But "Black Barbie" is about the importance of true expression, how seemingly simple things like plastic dolls can shape a child's identity, imagination and worldview.

But even a true icon can not escape the passage of time, and in 2022 the Swiss announced his retirement from professional tennis. The footage contained in this Prime video documentary was originally captured for Federer's private use, but it is now set to be exhibited publicly, giving his legions of fans the opportunity to see the legend in his most vulnerable, raw and candid. It's been more than 15 years since the first "Kung Fu Panda" movie, but the franchise hasn't slowed down any time soon. "Kung Fu Panda 4" launched in theaters back in May, and now it is ready to make its streaming bow to the peacock. This is the timing to keep the kids fully occupied during the summer vacation, but there's a little something for everyone in this animated action comedy

In this fourth installment of the franchise, Poe (Jack Black voiced) is forced to train a new dragon Warrior to take his place. He is set to become the new spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace, which means that he will become the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace. If that wasn't enough to deal with, Po's plight comes down to the emergence of a form・changing sorcerer known as the Chameleon (Viola Davis) seeking a staff of wisdom to help stop this scaly villain, Po finds a thief named Jen (Awkwafina) who proves that a hero can come in an unlikely form. Jessica Alba's first feature film in 5 years arrived on Netflix this week. "Trigger Alert" is an action thriller from director Mouly Surya, and Alba is tasked with running the business of a special Forces command family named Parker, who returns to her hometown after her father's unexpected death, balancing her new responsibilities with investigating the strange circumstances of his father's death.

However, this quest for answers leads to confrontation with local gangs that have an entire town under their control. But Parker is not the type to retreat from the fight, not only to find the truth, but also to train all of her to permanently end the reign of gang terror Netflix's recent action films have been less than stellar (last month's Atlas was a real low light), so my skepticism levels are pretty high for this, but I'm not a finger [sic]. 14]

Daisy Ridley of "Young Woman and The Sea" got a limited theatrical release last month, and another of her projects arrived on streaming this week. "Sometimes I Think about dying" is a comedy-drama that trades in bleak humour, but a little more hopeful than its dark name suggests. Ridley plays Fran, a socially awkward office worker who lives alone and fantasizes about his own death. But her world changes radically when she meets a new colleague who can cut through the self-built wall between her and the rest of the world.
