Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 hands-on review

Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 hands-on review

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 ($2,499) is the largest gaming monitor I have ever seen; at 57 inches, this ultrawide monitor makes the 49-inch Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 look small. In fact, the Odyssey Neo G9 is effectively a larger version of the latter, which is not a problem considering that the Odyssey OLED G9 is the best curved monitor and the best gaming monitor available.

I was able to check out the intimidating Odyssey Neo G9 at a recent Samsung event. I was impressed by its immersive 1,000R curved display, sharp 7,680 x 2,160 resolution, smooth 240Hz refresh rate, and fast 1ms response time. I need a little more time to make a final verdict, but based on my experience, the Odyssey Neo G9 will be the best gaming monitor for those who have the space at their gaming desk.

First impressions of the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 are as follows.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 can be pre-ordered now from Samsung's website, and the monitor will debut in October; those who pre-order by October 1 will receive a $500 Samsung credit.

Samsung is touting the Odyssey Neo G9 as the world's first dual UHD monitor. At 57 inches wide, the Odyssey Neo G9 is quite massive. But its wide field of view provides an immersive gaming experience.

The V-shaped stand is wide, but the narrow legs take up little space. If you like to place your gaming keyboard at an angle while gaming, the legs of the stand will not get in the way.

Like the Odyssey OLED G9, the Odyssey Neo G9 has an all silver enclosure covering the back. It also has RGB lighting around the monitor mount; the RGB lighting can be set to match the display for a more immersive experience.

The Odyssey Neo G9 may look horribly huge, but there is no denying that it is elegant hardware.

The Odyssey Neo G9's 57" curved display is a marvel to behold in person; not only does the 1000R curvature add to the immersive experience, but with a sharp 7,680 x 2,160 resolution, images look bright and colorful.

During the event, I tested titles in a variety of visual styles. Fornite, with its cartoonish art style and bold colors, looked phenomenal on the Odyssey Neo G9. Not only that, but thanks to the sharp resolution and 32:9 aspect ratio, I could see players trying to sneak up on me; even Call of Duty: Warzone's relatively realistic graphics looked great on this monitor.

Samsung says the monitor's Quantum Matrix technology with Quantum Mini LEDs creates controlled brightness and improved contrast for better resolution. The company also states that the displays can achieve peak brightness of 1,000 nits and have a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. I would need to take the Odyssey Neo G9 into a test lab to confirm these claims, but to my eyes, the monitor appears to offer excellent image quality.

Like the Odyssey OLED G9, the Odyssey Neo G9 allows picture-in-picture from two different sources simultaneously. While we were not able to test this feature at the show, a feature similar to the Odyssey OLED G9 would allow you to (for example) play a console game on one part of the display and view a website on the other.

The Odyssey Neo G9 needs to be thoroughly tested to see how well it performs overall, but from our brief hands-on time with it, we are not disappointed with its performance.

The 240Hz refresh rate helped make Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Need for Speed: Unbound run as smooth as butter The Odyssey Neo G9 is equipped with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro which prevents screen tearing and stuttering; FreeSync is an AMD feature, but if your gaming rig has an Nvidia GPU, it should generally work well.

The Odyssey Neo G9 has a response time of 1 ms, while the Odyssey OLED G9 has a response time of 0.03 ms. Competitive gamers (especially professional esports players) may notice a difference between the two monitors, but I certainly did not experience any noticeable input lag. For most people, 1ms should serve them well.

Samsung's Odyssey Neo G9 may be an oversized version of the already huge Odyssey OLED G9, but it seems to meet all my needs for a gaming monitor. Immersive viewing angles, smooth and fast performance, elegant design, and sharp visuals are all top-notch. If you need an ultra-wide-angle gaming monitor, this is the monitor to get.
